Digital Phones Switchover
Your phone landline is changing — are you ready?
The UK’s traditional landline phone service is being replaced. By January 2027, phone calls will be made using a broadband connection instead of the old copper phone network.
For most people, the change should be straightforward, and your phone number will stay the same. However, some devices may rely on your landline and could be affected, including telecare or personal alarms, door entry systems, burglar alarms, fax machines, payment terminals and other equipment connected to a phone line.
Please take these simple steps:
Check your devices — make a list of anything that plugs into your phone line or depends on it
Contact your provider — your phone or broadband provider can confirm what you need to do and what support is available
Plan ahead — providers will contact customers before the change, but early action can help avoid disruption
Please also check in with family members, friends and neighbours, especially anyone who may be older, vulnerable, living alone, or less confident with technology. They may need help to understand the change, check what equipment they use, or contact their provider.
